When you purchase a domain name for your business it is always important to secure one that makes sense. For example with many real estate agents, selecting their name is one of the best ideas where you are your business and everyone is sure to remember it.
If you are in the process of setting up your own website, you may have seen two terms come about: domain and domain name. Rest assured, these are basically the same thing and often used interchangeably.
What is a domain?
The domain is the part of the url that is after the “https://”. Put simply, it is the address users type in to visit your site such as “RockhopperMediaGroup.com.” Your domain is really like your street address. So instead of trying to remember an IP address for a website (which is like your plat and lot number of a home), your domain makes things easier like saying 456 Main Street.
Before including a domain extension such as “.com” or the like, the maximum domain length can be 63 characters long and the minimum is 1 character. One of the best things to do when considering the right domain for you is to visit a vendor such as Godaddy.com and plug in your desired address to see if it is available or not.
Domain Makeup
There are essentially two parts of a domain. The “second-level” domain is the part that comes before the “.com.” The other part is the “top-level” domain which most commonly is “.com.” This identifies the organization type that is registered online. For the United States, most businesses are commonly “.com” followed by “.net” or “.org.” Educational institutions are commonly found using “.edu.” Although there are over 1,500 top-level domains available worldwide, these are the ones that you will most commonly see.
